Betamax to digital file conversion

Betamax, launched by Sony in 1975 and arguably the better domestic format was eventually relegated to the pages of history by VHS and its relatively low cost and long recording times.
The consumer format was superior to VHS in many ways, better picture and sound quality but shorter record times as Betamax did not offer a long play mode. The very popular Betacam broadcast format was based on Betamax.
We can convert both NTSC and PAL variants of the Betamax format.

Easily identified by the Beta logo and slightly smaller than VHS. Tapes vary in duration and were available in lengths up to almost 4 hours.
This table shows the Betamax identifier / model number and duration for PAL recording.
We can convert Betamax PAL and Betamax NTSC formats.
| Tape model number | Duration |
| L-125 | 30 minutes |
| L-250 | 65 minutes |
| L-370 | 95 minutes |
| L-500 | 130 minutes |
| L-750 | 195 minutes |
| L-830 | 215 minutes |
Betamax NTSC Durations
Betamax NTSC offers different recording speeds similar to VHS Long play / Standard Play.
L750 – up to 4 hours in B III mode

Betamax video tapes are very susceptible to damage from moisture and incorrect storage. Long term exposure to moisture can cause irreversible damage. If there are signs of mould on the tape, consider getting them digitized sooner rather than later. Mould damaged tape can be saved, see our tape repair page.
We can transfer Betamax to digital file for use in archiving or editing applications.
